Castle: ground floor accessible with assistance to visitors in wheelchairs, though there are various steps and tripstones, including 4 steps to courtyard. Visitors may touch reproduction Elizabethan armour, cannon and cannonballs sounds of boats and helicopters from adjacent RN base. Tape tour with hearing loop included in admission charge script also available. Via one step to shop small seated area. Toilets.
One of the best preserved of Henry VIII's coastal forts, built of white Portland stone. Now standing quietly overlooking the harbour, it was originally intended to thwart attack by the Spanish and French, and changed hands several times during the Civil War.
