Porthcawl in the 19th century was another coal port in South Wales, and after the decline in coal exports changed into a lovely holiday resort.
Two miles northwest in the sand dunes are the poignant reminder of what sandstorms can do when it buried the town of Kenfig.
Kenfig Pool, less than a mile from the sea, is in fact locked in by dunes and is the largest freshwater lake in the country.
