URPoint Details
A holiday destination on a sandy coast founded by Sir William Maxwell in 1770, and Monreith House, was built in 1799 as their home. In the grounds stand a wheel-headed Celtic Cross, possibly dating back to the 5th century.
On Monreith Bay, just south of town is a restored chapel, Kirk-maiden-in-Fernis, on a site connected with an Irish princess, St Medan. Legend has it that she landed there after floating across Luce Bay on a rock from the Mull of Galloway, where she plucked out her eyes to discourage suitors. She bathed her face upon landing and her sight was restored.
