A short walk from the castle along Micklegate and Horsefair leads to the 18th century town hall, and beyond, to the wide market place, and the market cross dates from 1734.
A castle with many claims to fame and one is where Richard II was murdered in 1400, and later Roundheads and Royalists battled.
All Saints church rebuilt in 1838 fills part of the ruins of an earlier church.
