A village with a strange history noted for a young girl Lady Grizel Baillie who night after night would carry food to her imprisoned father who lay in the vaults of the church. He was a fugitive after the Monmouth Rebellion. To the south the church in the grounds of Marchmount House was rebuilt in 1703 and it was here that Sir Patrick Hume hid for a month in 1685.
