Pitt, William (the Elder), Earl of Chatham PC Claimed

Westminster SW1

URPoint Details

William Pitt (the Elder), Earl of Chatham PC born 15 November 1708, Westminster was a British Whig statesman who led Britain during the Seven Years’ War. He was Prime Minister with Newcastle during the period of 1757-61, and in his own right from 30 July 1766 to 14 October 1768.

He was a British statesman of the Whig group who led the government of Great Britain twice in the middle of the 18th century. Historians call him Pitt of Chatham, or William Pitt the Elder, to distinguish from his son, William Pitt the Younger, who also was a prime minister. Pitt was also known as The Great Commoner, because of his long-standing refusal to accept a title until 1766.

He died 11 May 1778 at Hayes in Kent.
