URPoint Details
No one can say with certainty when the fully restored Pitstone Mill was built. Documentary references to a mill go back to 1624, and the earliest date carved in the building is 1627. It is a post mill of early type and is certainly very ancient. The mill is not fitted with elaborate shuttered sails, nor with a fantail for turning it into the wind. Instead it is luffed or turned manually by the tailpole, which is mounted on a cartwheel. The sails were spread with cloth. Inside, the machinery is fully restored to working order.
