URPoint Details
Originally a Roman fortress, Pevensey saw its share of the violent power play of the Middle Ages. For centuries after William the Conqueror built the first Norman castle here, it was attacked and besieged many times. Remarkably, the castle walls were never breached. The massive outer walls and gatehouse of this fort, within which the Normans built another oval-shaped castle, now ruined. Parts of the towers, keep, dungeon and chapel remain and Elizabethan catapult balls and cannon can also be seen.
The Church of St Nicholas was originally Norman but is mainly 13th century with a clerestory. There is an interesting alabaster monument of 1616.
