Petwood Hotel - an unusual name - but with an historic and interesting connection. The house was built at the turn of the century for Lady Weigall on a site chosen by her in the area of her favourite 'pet wood'. The only child of Sir Blundell Maple, the furniture stores magnate, Lady Weigall and her husband, Sir Archibald Weigall, lived here at Petwood. In 1920, Sir Archibald was appointed Governer General of New South Wales and most of the following years were spent in Australia. Together, they entertained many famous guests including King George V, King George VI, and the Princesses Alice and Marie Louise.
There is one accessible bedroom on the ground floor which has specific facilities for disabled guests. There are 53 bedrooms all tastefully furnished, with comfortable, generous-sized beds and en suite bathrooms.
During the Second World War, the hotel was requistioned by the Royal Air Force and in 1943 it became the Officers' Mess for 617 Squadron - the famous ' Dambusters'. The Squadron Bar is dedicated to this famous group of men and contains memoribilia of great interest.The hotel extends a warm welcome to its visitors.
