Petersfield

Petersfield

URPoint Details

A very busy town on the London to Portsmouth road but there are still some outstanding buildings in Sheep Street, Dragon Street, and College Street, and there is also an attractive pub with a bow window.

The town was first granted a charter in the 12th century and became very prosperous from the wool trade and later as a coaching stop.

The Church of St Peter mainly dates from the 12th century and much restored in the 19th century. The Norman arch is quite beautiful, and there are some fine 18th century monuments

The top of the tower is Perpendicular.

It really is quite interesting to walk the streets looking at the names of them, as they all tell a story.

The town is set in a wide valley and fringed with beech and wide open downland.

Buster Hill, 3m southwest rises to 889ft and offers magnificent views as far as the Isle of Wight, there are two round barrows on Ramsdean Down, and even a rampart, ditches and an ancient Celtic cultivation system.
