Once the papermaking centre of Scotland drawing water from the River Esk, is now a fast growing Midlothian town.
To the south of the Pentland Hills with Scald Law rising to 1,898ft. To the north of the mountain in a deep trough lies the picturesque Loganlee reservoir.
The parish Church of St Mungo has a Doric portico and its belfry is the 12th century tower the former church of St Kentigern.
Valleyfield Mill, was founded in 1709, and was used to house French prisoners captured during the Napoleonic Wars, 300 died here and are commemorated by a monument.
Penicuik House dating from 1770 was largely destroyed by fire in 1899 and still retains its notable portico is an obelisk to Allan Ramsay, the poet who was born in 1686.
Part of the stables, have been rebuilt by a descendant of Sir Clerk to form a modern house.
The Clerk family owners of the estate still live here.
