Toilets; suitable for picnics; dogs allowed in certain areas. Disabled car park in castle grounds; disabled visitors may be set down at entrance; wheelchair access to castle via impacted gravel paths; all the ground floor is wheelchair accessible; spiral staircase and difficult steps to upper floors seats available. Access to grounds via level grassed and tarmac areas, but some steep parts for which pushers are needed; benches provide and many good viewpoints. Special tape tour available; there are some low doorways and ceilings, and the ramparts can be hazardous. Toilets not accessible, across cobbled area shop and coffee shop have easy access. This castle is a testament to the quality of the coastal defences erected by Henry VIII. The well-preserved granite gun fort and outer ramparts with great angled bastions, defended against invasion from the sea, but it was captured from the land after a long siege during the Civil War.
