This stately dock, built on a grid-iron system with grey buildings lining its straight streets was until the 1920s one of the chief naval dockyards, but it is now used mainly by ship repairers and chandlers.
An obelisk commemorating the launching of the Valerius and the Ariadne c1814, the first 2 ships made here, stands in Albion Square.
