URPoint Details
The ancient borough of Pembroke was built around the great 12th-century fortress of Pembroke Castle. Beside the sea on a rocky spur above the town, the castle, one of the finest in the country, was once the hub of a complex medieval defence system. Restoration work was started on the castle in 1880 and has been continued at intervals ever since.
Beneath the castle lies a huge, natural limestone cavern called the 'Wogan', which was linked to the main structure by a winding staircase and has an opening to the river.
Pembroke's long main street running east from the castle and the scene in October of a centuries-old fair.
