Situated on the important site of St Patrick's Isle at Peel, the castle's wall encircles the ruins of many buildings including the 11th century church, the round tower and the 13th century Cathedral of St German.
In the 11th century the castle became the ruling seat of the Norse Kingdom of Man and the Isles. Recent archaeological excavation has uncovered artefacts from the Norse period which are on display at the Manx Museum in Douglas.
