The village sits on the western edge of Exmoor with colour-washed cottages clinging to the sides of the valley leading down to the River Heddon. There
The medieval Church of St Petrock is a focal point in the village and a national protest saved it from being demolished when a new church was built in the village in 1878.
According to legend, the village was the first place in the county to have a Christian church which St Petrock built himself over 1,400 years ago, although no traces remain.
