The official residence of the Queen of Scotland.
The oldest part is built against the monastic nave of Holyrood Abbey, little of which remains. The rest of the Palace was constructed by the architect Sir William Bruce for Charles II.
Here Mary, Queen of Scots lived for six years, and it was here that she met John Knox.
The state apartments house tapestries and paintings and the Picture Gallery holds more than 80 Scottish kings painted by De Wet (1684-86).
