URPoint Details

A rural village which takes its name from the Saxon settlement in the 7th century, their leader Pacca sailed up the river Waveney from Pakefield and Blackbourne to make his home on the hill.
The family name of Peck still exists in the village.

The village forms a reversed ā€˜Lā€™ shape round a fen and the short arm is a pleasant village crossing a stream.

The church of St Mary stands on the hill at the apex of the ā€˜Lā€™, and is a fine cruciform building, partly dating back to its founder Walter about 1100.

The Fox Inn in the village centre, has a partly beamed bar split by an open fireplace and is a cosy place to have a bar meal. Children are welcome and the garden has a stream with ducks.

Pakenham Water Mill, Grimestone End. Open April to September on Wednesday, Saturday & Sunday from 2 to 5.30pm or by appointment. 18th century restored working mill with river walks, picnic area and shop.

Pakenham Windmill is a 19th century working tower mill.

The Whistler Window
A window bricked up in Mulberry house to avoid window tax, tempted Rex Whistler in the 1940s to paint a realistic figure of an 18th century parish priest, with wig, gown and candle, writing his sermon.
