A town well known for its thread, and is the largest manufacturing centre in the world and shawls in the Museum and Art Gallery show a priceless collection.
The town grew up around the Cluniac abbey founded in 1163 the nave is still in use as the parish church.
The church incorporates St Mirren’s Chapel, which contains an effigy of Marjory Bruce, supposedly the daughter of Robert. The present building dates mainly from the 15th century but the tower, choir and north transept have been rebuilt.
