Padworth is a neighbour of Aldermaston and, indeed, the parish, on the south side of the Kennet includes the area of Aldermaston Wharf where most of the houses are.
The ancient village of Padworth has vanished, probably a victim of the Black Death.
The church and great house, however, survive. The former is entirely Norman, a charming and simple building with a bellcote supported by massive timbers. On the nave east wall, traces still exist of a painting of St Nicholas and, below, the miracle of the three boys.
On the Bath Road in Padworth, which passes through Aldermaston Wharf, is the Hare and Hounds, an ancient coaching inn.
