URPoint Details
In remote and beautiful country, up a deep narrow valley, this attractive and memorable Church of St Nicholas of Myra, (Churches Conservation Trust) is set in a circular churchyard which suggests an early and perhaps pre-Christian site.
A complicated building history is revealed by the irregular hexagonal central tower of the early 12th century, which was probably the nave of the original church. A century later a small nave was added west of the tower and the chancel extended to the east. An 1873 restoration made further extensions and alterations.
The carving and design of the 13th century western tower arch are very fine and church and churchyard contain good monuments.
