URPoint Details

A beautiful county, with breathtaking scenery from the Chilterns to the Cotswolds, historic towns and villages, and the mighty River Thames coursing its way Oxford and beyond to London.

The rich grandeur of Oxfordshire's past is reflected in its array of historic houses and buildings. Oxford - lovingly known as the City of Dreaming Spires - is a delightful walking city, and home of the oldest university of English speaking people.

The country has some very interesting sites of historic importance. North Leigh Roman Villa, once a splendid country house with mosaic floors decorations. Rollright Stone Circle, on the road between Great and Little Rollright is a late Neolithic 'henge', smaller than Stonehenge or Avebury, but ranking with them in importance. Try and count the standing stones, with the 'King' stone and the 'Whispering Knights'.

There are some magnificent country homes, of course Blenheim Palace; home to the Dukes of Marlborough is by far the grandest of them all. Located on the edge of the historic town of Woodstock the land was given to John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, as a reward for his spectacular military success at Blenheim in 1704. Sir Winston Churchill
