The historic and attractive market town set in the loop of the River Nene was founded in 972AD, has beautiful limestone houses roofed with local Collyweston slate. The three storied gabled 'White Lion in North Street was built in 1661.
The Parish Church of St Peter, with its slender tower and delicate steeple (208ft), which bears the date 1624, dominates the skyline for miles around.
The triangular market place has four roads leading out of town, and is a hive of activity when the weekly stalls are set in place on Thursday.
The town is well known for its Free Grammar School, founded by Sir William Laxton, a London grocer, in 1556. It continued the modest existence of an earlier establishment dating back to the 15th century. The main building is flanked by The Cloisters on one side and the School House on the other.
