For centuries the English and Welsh fought for this lovely town until in 1535, Henry VIII’s Act of the Union made the town officially English.
Settlements have been here since the Bronze Age and there are remains of the vast Iron Age Hill Fort.
The Romans arrived in about AD75 and they built a castle here soon after the conquest in 1066 and it was inhabited again in the Middle Ages.
