Ormesby Hall, (NT), Church Lane, 3m southeast of Middlesbrough. Open April to end October, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday, Bank Holiday Mondays & Good Friday 2-5.30pm. Last admission 5pm. Admission charge; dogs on leads in park only.
Disabled visitors may be set down at house entrance; cars must then be taken back to car park; disabled drivers may park near the Hall. House: drive of firm gravel; one shallow step into house; ramp available. All ground floors level with wide doorways. Garden is accessible. A mid 18th century house with opulent decoration inside, including fine plasterwork by contemporary craftsmen. A Jacobean doorway with a craved family crest survives from the earlier house on the site. Teeside is where railways began and there is a developing model railway exhibition in the Old Wing.
A five acre garden with a variety of contrasting areas with formal rose beds to the west and south. Wall shrubs with roses, wisteria, honeysuckle, clematis – adorn the walls of the 18th century mansion. There are borders of mixed plantings with a delightful spring woodland garden with wild flowers.
