Orkney

URPoint Details

Off the northernmost coast of Scotland lie the green and fertile Islands of Orkney. The majestic waves of the Atlantic Ocean crash onto the cliffs of the western seaboard. The more sheltered inlying islands are surrounded by clear blue seas, rich with fish and many wild birds.

In these remote and beautiful islands, history confronts you everywhere you look, from the 5,000 year old stone ruins of Skara Brae to the ancient stone burial chambers of Maes Howe and Midhowe.

As one might expect in such a place, tradition is important, and nowhere more so than in the world's most northerly Scotch Whisky distillery, Highland Park. The distillery was founded in 1798 allegedly on the site of a famous whisky smuggler's bothy. The smuggler in question, Magnus Eunson, was also an Elder of the Church, which meant he could hide his illicit whisky under the pulpit where the Excise men were unlikely to find it.

POMANA is the name given to the mainland of Orkney
