The little town has many links with the poets Cowper and Newton. William Cowper wrote some of his famous poems at Orchard Side in Market Place. He enjoyed the quaint companionship of three hares, the subject of many letters, termed 'divine chit-chat' by Coleridge and Lamb. John Newton, the reformed slave trader, became a clergyman hymn writer.
