Old Warden

Old Warden

Old Warden , England

URPoint Details

A village of lovely pastoral buildings and settings, where Lord Ongley created a delightful pocket of a romantic past here in Bedfordshire.

The village shop and post office has an interesting curiosity shop where you can purchase local Bedfordshire items.

Some of the delightful thatched cottages date back to the early 1800s.

Close to Old Warden is the magical aviation destination, The Shuttleworth Collection. Hangars from the 1920s and 30s at Old Warden Aerodrome house one of the great aircraft gatherings of the world. The collection of vintage cars, motorcycles and aircraft - including a Sopwith Pup, Sopwith Camel, Fokker Triplane, Spitfires, and a great variety of deHavilland machines - was started by Richard Shuttleworth between the Wars. When his Hurricane was shot down in World War Two and Shuttleworth was killed, his parents decided to add to his considerable collection of aircraft as a memorial to their son. The result is one of the world's greatest collections of airworthy vintage aircraft - including some airframes from the movie 'Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines' - aviation record breakers and warbirds.
