Open April, May and September, Sundays and Bank Holidays. June to August, daily except Monday & Thursday 2pm-6pm. Exhibition showing history of the site, house and family, archaeological work in progress.
A Norman castle once stood here and in the 16th century was replaced by the crenellated Tudor mansion of Basing House built by Sir William Paulet, First Marquess of Winchester. In 1645 Oliver Cromwell burnt down this fine house, and little remains today.
