Okehampton Castle, (EH)

Picnic area of exceptional beauty. Parking for disabled visitors in small lay-by opposite castle entrance (advisable to phone in advance in high season) access to castle & grounds vis steps to ticket office, but alternative entrance alongside lower gate. Lower grounds accessible to wheelchair users. There are steep slopes and steps to the bailey and again to the motte, bit there is alternative access to the bailey across fairly even grass and a slope benches provided. Special tape tour included in admission price bird song, pond with waterfall adjoining stream at front of castle. Tape tour with hearing loop included in admission price scripts also available. Toilets have ramped access but assistance essential. Snacks available from ticket kiosk picnic are accessible with help via earth path and gate) rough grass in meadow. Visitors with disabilities are advised to bring a companion, though staff will help wherever possible.
The ruins of the largest castle in Devon stand above a river surrounded by splendid woodland. There is still plenty to see, including the Norman motte, the jagged remains of the keep and lovely woodland walks.
