Odiham - Hampshire

Odiham

URPoint Details

This country town retains its rural character even though it is expanding towards the two large towns of Basingstoke and Aldershot. Its wide street is Georgian it also has a Tudor vicarage, a 14th century church, and almshouses. But it is the Pest House which is intriguing, as it was built to house victims of the Great Plague in 1665.

King John set out on his historic journey to Runneymede in 1215 from the castle which is now in ruins.

There are some lovely Tudor cottages in King Street.

The church originally Norman is now mostly 14th century, it has a 17th century gallery staircase and balustrades and the pulpit is interesting. There is a 13th century chalk font and some fine monuments dating from the 15th 16th and 17th century. One brass is particularly poignant is to Margaret Pie, in swaddling clothes, as she died a baby in 1636.

The stocks and whipping post can still be seen near the north side of the churchyard.
