Oban is mainly a seaside resort a one of the main steamer services to Mull, Iona, Coll, Tiree, Barra, South Uist, Colonsay and Lismore and also provides access to the breathtaking mountains, lochs and forests.
Sir Walter Scott who visited the town is largely responsible for Oban being so popular when he included local scenes in his poem ‘The Lord of the Isles’ in 1815.
The ruins of the 15th century Dunollie Castle stands on a promontory at the mouth of Oban Bay. Founded in the 7th century in was the principal seat of the MacDougalls, then passed to the Stewarts and finally to the Campbells.
