Dogs allowed in grounds only, on leads. Permission will usually be given for disabled visitors to be driven to front door car park approx. 300 yds from house. House: level access to ground floor lift to first floor. Tactile book and audio tour.
A fine Palladian house, built for the Winn family in 1733. An additional wing and many of the state rooms were designed by Adam. There is a fine collection of Chippendale furniture, specially made for the house.
Shrub and woodland garden centred on an informal lake which dates from at least medieval times. There two designs for the garden, by Joseph Perfect and Stephen Switzer, survive from the 1730s. In the 19th century there was prolific planting of rhododendrons and west of the lake stands a small Gothick building 'a menagerie' designed by Robert Adam. There is a handsome bridge erected in 1761 where the Wakefield-Doncaster road crosses the lake.
