Norwich emerged under the reign of King Athelstan in the 10th century, and during the Norman Conquest was a city with a population of about 5500.
The city was a major wool centre by the end of the 14th century.
It is a beautiful city, clean and tidy with lots of little alleys packed with shops.
Market day is Tuesday in the square and the stalls are under cover and well worth a visit.
Guildhall, Market Place. Built in the 15th century and restored in the 19th century. One of the prize exhibits is the spanish generals sword presented to the city by Horatio Nelson in 1797.
