Samuel Pepys admired the bells of the parish church which he said were ‘mighty tuneable’, other visitors included the Duke of Monmouth and Judge Jeffries.
It was here in 1685 that an attempt was made on Monmouth’s life during the rebellion.
In the village is The George a 15th century inn of stone and timber.
