Northwold - Church of St Andrew

Northwold - Church of St Andrew

Northwold , England

URPoint Details

The church of St Andrew is still in the centre of the village, and possibly so fine as Hugh of Northwold was Bishop of Ely between 1229 and 1254 when the present building was begun.
It contains a unique feature on the north wall next to the altar of a large Easter sepulchre in the country and dates from about 1480.

A wall-hanging near the door gives an explanation of its original use in pre-Reformation ritual. It is now 9feet by 11feet but was originally larger.

There are several chalk cottages of interest some with cinder galletting and a good example can be seen opposite the junction of the street and the present Methwold road.
