The Cathedral dates back to the 7th century and was founded by the Anglo-Saxon bishops.
The Danish invasion brought its decline, but in the early the 10th century was revived and became the centre of a diocese covering East Anglia again it was left to decline again and is now in ruins.
The remains of a Norman chapel converted into a fortified dwelling and enclosed by earthworks in the late 14th century by the notorious Bishop of Norwich, Hugh le Despencer.
