A Sidlaw hills village with the high points of Auchterhouse Hill at 1,399ft and Craigowl Hill at 1,493ft rising to the east.
To the south of the village at the beginning of ascent over the Glack of Newtyle in the Sidlaws the road to Dundee passes the ruined 16th century Hatton Castle.
