Newtown , Wales

URPoint Details

The name Newtown was changed in medieval times from Cadewain, and is probably one of the few towns with such a diverse selection of period buildings including some from Gothic, Tudor, Jacobean, Georgian, Edwardian and of course Victorian. Today there are some beautiful modern buildings to add to variety of architecture.

In 1885 the little stone and half-timbered building in which Owain Glyndwr held one of his parliaments during the early part of the 15th century was brought from Dolgellau and re-erected on its present site in Newtown.

Robert Owen (1771-1858), the famous reformer and mill owner who inspired the Co-operative society was born here and is buried in St Mary’s churchyard.
Also buried here (are a boy and girl, lovers who were denied marriage by their families and consequently made a suicide pact and took poison). Thousands attended the funeral: in death the couple were allowed to be together and were buried in the same grave.
