Newport was known in the 5th century as Gwynllyw after the warrior who ruled here.
The cathedral is Norman and is dedicated to Gwynllyw and still retains some of the original interior and there is a magnificent 12th century decorated arch.
There are some fine historic buildings including Murenger House an old Elizabethan house in the High Street, and on the outskirts is Tredegar House dating from the 17th century.
Situated on the River Usk the town was granted a charter by Richard II and has been known as Castell Newydd.
There the 6 miles of quays date from 1842 and the lofty transporter bridge rises to 177ft.
There is a commemorative plaque on Church House Inn near the docks of the poet, author William Henry Davies who was born here in Newport.
The church dedicated to St Woollos is described as being ‘a Norman gem in a Gothic basket’ and is a typical Norman interior with two aisles, a chancel and a semi-military tower.
