URPoint Details
Beautifully situated at the point where the River Nevern enters Newport Bay, with cheerfully painted houses, and buildings and in the Norman era it was the capital of an area of Cemaes.
Only parts of the 13th century castle remain and can still be seen in Market Street with its tall gatehouse converted to a residence in 1859.
In the churchyard is a poignant reminder just what can happen at sea with a headstone bearing the inscription ‘John Morris, Master of the Schooner Jane of this port…who with his crew perished in a gale of wind at sea in a voyage from Galway to London in the month of August 1838.
