The Saxons were here and later the Normans added a keep to the castle. The town sits on the River Medina which cuts the island into East Wight and West Wight and some quite large vessels still sial up the river.
There are a number of fine old buildings including the central square and Guildhall built by John Nash who also designed Regent Street in London. The Old Grammar School dates from 1619, God’s Providence House is from 1701, Chantry House is from 1612.
