Newport - Church of St Woolos or Woollos
Stow Hill, Newport NP20 4EA, Wales
URPoint Details
The Church of St Woolos or Woollos at the top of Stow Hill became a pro-cathedral of the new diocese of Monmouth in 1921. The nave is 12th century Norman and the chancel of the Decorated style has a most peculiar Early English ‘Galilee’ (St Mary’s Chapel) between the nave and the massive square tower. The Norman doorway of the nave has two columns which reputedly came from the Roman ruins at Caerleon.
The font, tombs and effigies are all interesting.
