Newmarket has been the headquarters of British horse racing, breeding and training since 1605 when James I began hunting in the area. Spring and autumn races were held to coincide with his visits. Since Charles I, monarchs have continued their patronage and the town is surrounded by a heath where horses can still be seen exercising daily.
