Newmarket has been the headquarters of British horse racing, breeding and training since 1605 when James I began hunting in the area. Spring and autumn races were held to coincide with his visits. Since Charles I, monarchs have continued their patronage and the town is surrounded by a heath where horses can still be seen exercising daily.The Jockey Club, in the High Street, was built in 1772. The Rutland Arms Hotel is a Georgian building with a red-brick front and even older interior walls.High Street is the ancient road between London & Norwich and at one end is the Jubilee Clock tower, and at the other end is The Cooper Memorial Fountain.
