The original inhabitants of this fishing village were Dutch, and may have some bearing on the way the fishwives picturesque dress.
Since its foundation in 1500 by James IV, Newhaven has supplied Edinburgh with fish.
The ‘Great Michael’ was launched here in 1511 at 240ft long it was then the largest ship afloat, however it indirectly contributed to Scotland’s defeat at Flodden in 1513, since all the skilled gunners in the kingdom were employed on the ship.
