Situated on the Pow Burn and backed by the outlines of Meikle Hard Hill at 1,300ft and Criffel at 1,866ft, the village is overlooked by the red-stone ruins of the Cistercian abbey founded in 1273, by Devorgilla, mother of the vassal king John Balliol.
She founded Balliol College in Oxford in memory of her husband.
