The village name has had many different spellings since Saxon times.
Neutenden and Nezenden were two of them and in the reign of Edward the Confessor it was called Newenden.
Cranes Farm and Cranes Farm Road owe their origin to the Hugh Le Crane family that farmed here in 1272.
The church is dedicated to St Peter and still retains its original lancet windows, the existing chancel walls date from the 13th century.
