The town once in Saxon hands is now a popular tourist destination with good beaches and cliff walks.
It is said that in 1284 Edward I staged a tournament here as part of the celebrations to mark the final defeat of Llewellyn ap Gruffydd and the site of the tournament lists can still be seen.
