The village has a long history dating from Roman times and is mentioned in the Domesday Book as having three manors, woods sufficient to feed 900 pigs and four hives of bees.
The parish church of St Thomas dating back to Norman times has many memorials including those to Elizabeth, daughter of the 3rd Earl Waldegrave and lady of the bedchamber to Queen Charlotte. The Waldegraves held the manor from 1554 and in 1776 enclosed Navestock common.
